Your Next Mammogram: Should You Choose Digital Over Film?
Death rates from breast cancer
dropped approximately 30
percent over the past three
decades, due in part to early
detection through mammograms. Those
numbers may improve further with digital
mammography.
Traditional X-ray film and digital mammograms provide a clear vision of the inside of the breast. Digital technology offers the following additional benefits:
- Digital mammograms can be read immediately on a computer by a certified radiologist, eliminating anxious wait times.
- Digital images can be refined during viewing. The radiologist can manipulate brightness, contrast and clarity.
- Digital mammograms are stored on a computer and can be transmitted electronically to other experts if needed.
Clinical Results
In the largest clinical trial of its kind, digital mammography was shown to be significantly better than traditional film in detecting early cancers in the following groups:- premenopausal women;
- women younger than 50 years; and
- women with dense breast tissue.
