Free Flu Protection Kits Available from Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s HealthCare

Louisville, Ky.– The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are predicting an early and possibly severe flu season.  To help prevent a widespread local outbreak, Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s HealthCare is offering free flu protection kits to the community.

Free kits are available to the general public at VNA Nazareth Home Care Flu Shot clinics and 27 Jewish Physicians Group offices throughout the community.

Each kit contains a bottle of hand sanitizer, disposable thermometer, tissues, flu information pamphlet and medical mask.

“In addition to vaccination, the best way to prevent the flu is through everyday precautions such as hand washing,” said Dr. Lynn Simon, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s HealthCare.  “We hope the community will take advantage of these free kits to help them stay well during the peak of flu season in the coming months.”

Dr. Simon recommends following “The Three C’s” to help slow the progression of the flu viruses: clean, cover and contain.
• Clean: Wash hands frequently with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers, especially after coughing or sneezing. Also, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
• Cover: Cover coughs or sneezes with a tissue or hands, then dispose of the tissue and always wash your hands afterwards.
• Contain: If you have flu-like symptoms, do not go in public except to seek medical care.

In addition to the general public, JHSMH distributed flu protection kits to local community groups including the Louisville Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs, the Center for Women and Families, and Dare to Care.
