Hospital System Collecting Blankets for Homeless Shelters

Blanket Collections now through Nov. 18

Louisville, KY…Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s HealthCare (JHSMH) and the Blanket Louisville Program are teaming up again this year to collect new and gently used blankets for those who need some help in staying warm this winter. JHSMH has been working with the Steve and Kathy Fehder family and Blanket Louisville for the past six years.  The Fehder family originally began the program as a school project to help the homeless and others who are less fortunate.

Kathy Fehder said, “We are so excited to have Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s HealthCare as a collection partner in this effort.  Together with the Blanket Louisville team, JHSMH is helping to not only warm bodies, but also warm hearts!”

Since the project began six years ago, they have collected nearly 20,000 blankets, which have been distributed with the help of the Coalition for the Homeless to homeless organizations and others who work with the less fortunate.  This year’s collection campaign goal is 7,500 blankets.   Participation by area schools, churches, businesses and community organizations is crucial to the success of this program.

“With the downturn in the economy and many people out of work, this year is even more difficult for many families to stay warm during the winter months,” said Tom Gessel, president/CEO of Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital. “We are honored to be a part of the Blanket Louisville Program to help them meet their goal. When we began collecting blankets, Sts. Mary & Elizabeth was our only location, now we have 10 locations throughout the metro Louisville area where donated blankets can be dropped off.”

“Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s HealthCare is vital to the health of our community, said Marty Bonick, president/CEO of Jewish Hospital & Frazier Rehab Institute. “We touch the lives of more than one million patients a year and provide charity care and community benefits in excess of $52 million a year.  Collecting these blankets is one more way we can care for our community, especially those in need this winter.”

Those wishing to donate a blanket should drop them off at one of the following Jewish Hospital and St. Mary’s HealthCare facilities by Wednesday, November 18:
